Usually this time of the year after Amelia Island it gets pretty quiet in way of car auctions and events. Not until May and June, will we have more concours events and collector car auctions. What many don’t know about is the Concours d’Elegance taking place on April 21st through April 23rd. The Concours itself is still up and coming and it is a nice event for sure, but along with any concours comes an auction. At the Texas show there is a Worldwide Auctioneers sale featuring quite a few cars. Down in that part of the country, the muscle car market is certainly much stronger than anything else so in this sale we see a pretty large variety of the 1960’s and 1970’s American muscle cars. In terms of the muscle cars that they do have, they have some pretty good ones such as a matching numbers 1967 Corvette L-79 roadster with a four speed and a well documented 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 fastback with a four speed. With this being said, this can give some opportunity to possibly pick up the cars that are out of the ordinary or out of favor in the Texas collector car market. The auction as a whole isn’t really all that appealing to us, with a lot of restomod and not so significant cars, but there are a few that would certainly be worth having. The sale isn’t for a month so we will pick a few of the cars that we think would be worth having up until the sale.
For today we are choosing a car that we think might possibly appeal to the boys down in Texas, but also might not because it is a prewar classic as opposed to a postwar muscle or restomod monster or a truck. The 1937 supercharged Cord Phaeton is our choice today, and it looks to be a pretty good car. If you don’t already know what a Cord is, they were a car built in Auburn, Indiana and created and owned by E.L. Cord. Beginning with the L-29 in 1929 Cord became the first American production front wheel drive car and later in 1936 and 1937 became known for their streamlined deco looking cars, the 810’s and the 812’s which were offered in supercharged and non-supercharged form. At first glance the restoration on the car offered by Worldwide looks to be proper and the paint and upholstery look pretty good. There is even a video of the car doing a bit of driving and it sounds pretty good. The one thing that stands out to us is that the car has its original data plate on the firewall which is a huge plus when it comes to these Cord 810’s and 812’s.
You have to be careful with these cars because a cool but sneaky feature that these cars have is that the nose completely unbolts form the body. We say it’s sneaky because you can take a front half of a supercharged Westchester sedan and bolt it back on to a phaeton or roadster back half that came off of a non-supercharged car so you really have to know what you are looking at when you look at a phaeton or roadster 810 or 812. Worldwide does state that this car was certified by the Auburn Cord Duesenberg club, but that means nothing to us here at Driven because we have seen some cars that were really not good with ACD certifications, but it does make the car easier to sell for sure.
The sad part is that if you have a good car without an ACD certification it makes it really difficult to sell if you wanted to. This car looks very honest and we believe it to definitely be an original supercharged phaeton and the ACD certification certainly doesn’t hurt it. Overall the car looks to be a good one. It can be found here on the Worldwide Auctioneers website marked no reserve and without an estimate. We believe this car should fetch somewhere in the $125,000 – $150,000 range.
